Rug pulls & token safety

What is a rug pull?

Short answer

A rug pull is when a token's creators or insiders take the money and leave buyers holding something worthless, usually by pulling liquidity, blocking sells or dumping supply.

The name comes from having the rug pulled out from under you. On Solana, where launching a token takes minutes, rug pulls are common and come in a few flavours.

A liquidity pull drains the pool the token trades against, so there's nothing left to sell into. A honeypot lets you buy but not sell. Mint abuse prints new supply to dump on holders, and freeze abuse locks your tokens in place. A slow rug is insiders quietly selling over hours or days.

You can check several warning signs on-chain: whether the token can be sold, whether mint and freeze authority are revoked, whether liquidity is locked and how concentrated the holders are. Passing those checks lowers the risk. It never removes it.
