Solana memecoin basics, and how to stay safe

· 6 min read · DYOR team

If you're new to memecoins, this is the short version of what you need before your first trade. It won't make you a good trader. It should help you avoid the most common expensive mistakes.

What a memecoin is

A memecoin is a token whose value comes almost entirely from attention: a joke, a character, a community. There's usually no product, revenue or cash flow behind it. Prices are driven by who is buying and selling, and they can move enormously in minutes.

Why Solana

Solana transactions are fast and usually cost a fraction of a cent, which makes small, frequent trades practical. That's why so many memecoins launch there. See why memecoins are on Solana.

How new tokens are born

Most start on a launchpad, priced along a bonding curve. If enough people buy, the token graduates to a regular exchange pool. Thousands launch every day, and most fade quickly.

The numbers on a token page

  • Mint address: the token's real identity. Names and tickers can be copied; the mint address can't.
  • Liquidity: how much is in the pool. Low liquidity means your trade moves the price. See liquidity.
  • Market cap: price times supply. Easy to inflate when liquidity is thin. See market cap.
  • Volume: how much traded recently. It can be faked by wallets trading with themselves.

The scams to know

  • Rug pulls: the people behind a token pull the liquidity or dump their supply.
  • Honeypots: you can buy but not sell.
  • Copycat tokens: same name and ticker as a popular token, different mint address.
  • Fake support: someone DMs you offering help and asks for your key, seed phrase or a “verification” transaction. Real support never does this. We will never DM you first.
  • Drainer links: “claim your airdrop” sites that ask you to sign a transaction that empties your wallet.

A safety checklist before every trade

  1. Decide the most you'll put in, before you look at the chart.
  2. Check the mint address, not just the name.
  3. Read the rug check. Skip anything that fails; treat “not checked” as a caution.
  4. Compare your trade size with the pool's liquidity.
  5. Keep slippage tight enough that a bad fill fails rather than costs you.
  6. Know your exit before you enter.
  7. Never share your key or seed phrase, with anyone.

Risk note: Most memecoins lose most of their value, and many go to zero. Treat any money you put in as money you're prepared to lose entirely. DYOR and ApedIn are for adults 18 and over, and aren't available where prohibited.
